Centre Director, National School of Drama, Sikkim

Born in Kolkata, Souti Chakraborty started Theatre in 1984. He was associated with the “ GRIPS ” theatre in Kolkata for 6 years. He was graduated from National School of Drama in the year 2001 with specialization in Design and Direction. He has worked in National School of Drama Repertory Company for 7 years as a Designer, Director and Actor. As a light designer he has designed more than 90 productions. Some of his major directorial works are “Chanakya Vishnugupta” for National School of Drama Repertory Company, “Look Back in Anger”, “Aparichit ( a non-verbal play)”, “Accidental death of an anarchist”, “Adhantar” , “ A Streetcar named desire”, “Urubhangam” , “Kanyadaan” etc.

As an actor, he has done almost 1000 performances across India. He represented India in “Young Theatre –Workers Workshop” in Berlin, Germany. For the last 13 years along with other theatre activities, he is also teaching in NSD, various universities and theatre institutes across India.

He has been awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award for his contribution as a light designer for the year 2019. He has also been awarded “Manohar Singh Smriti Puraskar” by National School of Drama. For 10 years, he was the Technical Director for Bharat Rang Mahotsav (the international theatre festival organised by National School of Drama). He has designed “BLACK BOX Auditorium” in India and also working as a consultant for building and up-gradation of Theatre Spaces across India. As Technical director or as Light Designer he has travelled to Germany, Greece, Italy, Russia, China and Bangladesh.
